Manhattan Mania

Long time no write......so back again...a good 2 months of breathing the US air...things have been quite busy here....have been working on 4-5 things at a time...but enjoying it nevertheless....
had been to New York city during the long weekend in the beginning of september...was quite an awesome experience...3 days of pure freaking awe...

day 1 : met up with gavane, my college buddy working at Infosys and now at New Haven, Connecticut on an on-site assignment..we met up at 42nd street, 8th avenue in the heart of manhattan and then proceeded to La Guardia airport to pick his friend Mahesh up, who was joining us from San Fransico(excuse me for the intricate level of details...but i intend to continue writing this way..:-))...after picking him up we headed to the Flushing Meadows in Queens to watch the US Open..!!!We had a full day ticket for the day's matches..!!!Matches watched : Roger Federer!!! vs Fabrice Santoro...Maria Sharapova!!! vs Mary Pierce...Andre Agassi!!! vs Jiri Novak....Paradorn Srichapan vs Dominik Hrbaty....and a photo-op with apna own Mahesh Bhupathi...

Photos : US Open

Day 2 : Reached Gavane's home in New Haven...tried very hard to rent a car, but were unsuccessful as all of us were below 25...!!Connecticut had some crazy rule where rentals are only for ppl above 25..!!Then had this brilliant flash idea of playing tennis...we realised we had only one racquet.....then we scouted the whole of New Haven(on cabs of course) to get a sports shop...finally found one a bought a racquet for 25 bucks....then started the hunt for a public tennis court...!!spent another hour or so..finally landed up at some school tennis courts at 6.30 in the evening..still managed an hour of tennis....i lost to both gavane and mahesh....but whatha heck..its been 2.5 yeras since i played....i still had the highest 1st serve percentage among all..and they are supposed to be regular players...!!Came back to gavane's house..he had made some delicious chicken curry and biryaani..man does he cook well..!!he had bought a bottle of chiva's regal......true to its name this one's really reagall..so smooth...!!left us craving for more...!!
Day 3:next day were going back to new york to see the city.....on the way stopped over at gavane's office....snaps from there....:

SBC Office at New Haven by the beach

Reached New York at 3 pm....had lunch at a desi restaurent in manhattan called Bombay Masala...then went to Ellis island ferry point to go to statue of liberty..realised that we had juss missed the last ferry...blew kisses to ms.liberty from a distance and left the place...then started one of the longest walks of my life.....we walked right from downtown manhattan to almost grand central railway station which is in upper midtown manhattan...maybe a good 8-9 miles or so..but thoroughly enjoyed the walk....places caught on the way...:wall street, ground-zero, NYSE, rockefeller center, avenue of americas, Empire State Building(went upto the top 86th floor..sooper..!!)....

Snaps : New York City

Finally took the bus back home and reached home at 11.30 in the night....!!phew...that was some trip......

a trip to Atlantic City planned for sometime soon.....update will keep coming...

adios...

Euro 2004 Contd...

Had posted a rather strong entry about the quality of football in Euro 2004 a few days back. My oh my....have i been proved wrong...??most definitely yes....!!!the quality of football that the teams have displayed in the quarter-final stages has been quite outstanding to say the least....!!!

eng-portugal : as i had metioned earlier, england were my tournament favourites....but they were made to bite the dust by the hosts portugal by a display of awesome attacking football...england deserved to lose for having played so defensively....especially pulsating was the period during extra time when scolari went all out with about 8 strikers and ericksson played rather defensively. It was sheer luck that england survived to play the penalties...the one goal by rui costa was a demonstration of portugal's power play....the penalties were a separate chapter by themselves....beckham..beckham....3 penalty misses this year.....what more can u say....??reinforces my belief that he is a moderate talent coupled with a lot of media hype and good packaging....very debatable topic though...!!!

the rest of the matches were quite engrossing too...a complacent france losing to minnows greece......sweden and the dutch dishing out anohther pot-boiler....and the surprise package of the tournament, the czechs banishing the danes....

am hoping for a very intriguing end to the tournament....am placing my bets on the hosts.....just for the sheer atacking football they play, they deserve to win....!!
